August 01, 1949 hayashi@fairpoint.net Ellensburg WA RETIRED Program Coordinator at CWU Widowed 2 4 37 In the past 30 years I have raised two wonderful and challenging children, lived and enjoyed life in beautiful central Washington, worked for a state-wide grant in the field of special education, and most recently, said goodbye to an amazing husband who was the best part of me. I am learning how to slow down and enjoy the moment. Lots of time now to spend with family and friends, taking walks with Riley (my dog), gardening and landscaping the yard, and traveling. Lots of places to go and enjoy, including the place I love most, home.

dgoodlet@comcast.net Vancouver WA Education Administration Married two None 36 After stints as a middle school and high school principal and assistant superintendent, I have returned to a central office position as the Director of Special Services and School Reform for the Vancouver Public Schools. By choice this occupies a considerable amount of time but Pam and I always find time to treat ourselves to some dinners in Portland and an occasional trip exploring the lakes and rivers in our kayaks. Times have never been better. I officially retired in 2002 with 31 years in education, but due to a change in the retirement laws I have kept on working. Most likely Ill retire for real in another year or so and then who knows. For a while I was an independent travel agent and that allowed Pam and me to explore parts of the world we might not have otherwise seen. So Im sure that continuing to visit a variety of cultures will be in our future plans. But the more I think about it, Id really like to take it easy and put a more recent hobby into practice by working for one of the local micro distillery, making and mixing spirits.

kdougkel@aol.com Keyport Wa Engineer Married 2 Sons (35 and 33) 1 grand-daughter, 5 37 Working, of course. Think last reunion I was at was 25(?) years. Time flys. We (wife Kathy and myself) just built a new house in Poulsbo on 2.3 acres, so landscaping and personallizing the homestead is taking most of our time. Playing some golf, bowling, and trying to keep up with the rest of the family as their lives change. We are trying to not have too many senior moments, but they do occur, along with all the new aches and pains. No definite plans, will probably have to work forever to pay for the new home. We do plan to do some travelling some day, just not sure when. Mostly, just try to stay healthy and wealthy enough to really enjoy retirement.
At last. Was wondering if there would ever be another one. Send Doug a MessageSend Doug a Message

July 04, 1949 Murphy@Olypen.com Sequim WA retired Married 2 4 36.5 For the past ten years, my husband Pete (SHS '68) and I have been living in Port Angeles, Washington. Until a couple of years ago, I was working at the Housing Authority of Clallam County helping low income families, senior citizens and persons with disabilities. Since then I have retired. Pete and I enjoy spending time in our motor home mostly in the many campgrounds here on the Olympic Peninsula, our favorite being Kalaloch. Prior to the higher gas prices, we took a few trips to southern California to see our son and his family(who just moved north to Lake Stevens this summer), Arizona to see my sister, and several trips along the Oregon coast and points of interest throughout Washington state. All of these trips have been shared with our ten year old female golden retriever named Murphy. A highlight of the past ten years was an Alaskan cruise two years ago to celebrate retirement. That is something I'd definitely like to do again sometime in the next few years. I retired from my last job, but I wouldn't mind working part time in the future. Other than that, we'll probably continue to do some traveling and see our grandchildren more often.

We returned to Salem to be close to two of my daughters and my grand children. We have traveled quite a bit including going to the Amazon as part of a medical mission and motorcyling all of Central America, Mexico and up the Alcan highway and haul rode to Prudhoe Bay, Ak. I'm not sure when I'll retire. If I choose to work past 62 or so, I would likely pursue a different line of work that affords us more time to travel, golf, and enjoy our grandchildren. This will obviously depend as well on how long my wife, Julia, chooses to work (she is a realtor).

Sold my '71 Mustang, 351 Cleveland with Ram Air, dang it! I continue to sing in the church choir, fish, travel very little and strive to intake alcohol moderately each day for the health benefits. At least you're only challenging my memory of the past 10 years? Thank you for that! Life is full. In the past ten years I have watched my child become a beautiful woman, who will be graduating with honors from Tufts U in Boston. As for me, although my masters degree is in Social Work, I have worked as a Healthcare Administrator in Central and South Seattle for the past 20+ years. I am on the faculty of the Uof W School of SW,on the Board of the School of Nursing at the UW (apparently they liked the idea of having someone who dropped out of the nursing school and chose another adventure). I'm on the Board of the Seattle African American Comfort Program and the African American Reach and Teach Health also. My husband and I are Real Estate Investors, and some of our favorite properties are the Vaudville Theatre in historic Columbia City, 26 Brix in Walla Walla, Jimi's house in Renton, and Jacks Antiques in Everett . I have done the landscape design at our home in W Seattle, attend as many music and art venues that we can fit into our schedule(from rock to jazz to classical to hip hop, SAM, theater, and dance etc). I have enjoyed re-unions with some of my women friends from Shoreline and regret I will not be part of this great party! We also travel quite a bit. OK thats enough about me (us)! I have retired twice, I keep coming back for more! We are both very community service oriented, but eventually, I suppose we will find a warm climate (with global warming that could be Alaska), and spend part of our time here and somewhere else ( we like the S. of Spain quite a bit. We both love Seattle ( currently), but there is some definite appeal to traveling (we love learning about and experiencing other cultures)and warmth becomes increasingly appealingl!
I will be out of the country during the re-union,and would re-schedule if it didn't mean missing out on my daughter joining us and other connections in Europe we had already planned. I look forward to this opportunity to share in each others lives after so many years. Tonight on this website is the music of Jimi Hendrix. (thank you Mike) Somehow magically my husband and I had the opportunity to help out Jimi's brother Leon and bought his childhood home so that he could eventually turn it into whatever. What a 60's thing to do!  Anyway, the past 40 years has had its joys and sorrows, but what an adventure! I've been a single parent seemingly forever, living mostly in Whittier, Calif. I worked 18 years as a purchaser for a small custom trailer company. In '94, my son (then about age 21) went to live with his dad's parents so I could go live with my folks in Santa Barbara to attend UCSB. Earned a degree, then went for the one-year teaching credential/master's program. I got a teaching job back in the Whittier area, fifth grade, in the same district as my best friend. She and her husband (both teachers!) helped me through the first rough year. I now teach third grade, and am so glad that I rerouted my life by going back to school. My son got married (finally) about two years ago, and this last February I finally became a grandmother, little Jake. With my late second career, I can't think of retirement. I'll probably be pushing a walker into classes to substitute as long as they'll take me! (anyone remember the "sub" who always wore blue?) I'll have to come up with my own trademark.

June 19, 1949 Janicwb@Yahoo.com Decatur TX Professional Horse Trainer & Published Author Married One hatched and 2 acquired none 20 yrs until he died in '98. Currently getting ready to celebrate 10 yrs w/#2 Wow! What a ride this is turning out to be! I've learned so much about life, others, animals & myself over the past 40+ yrs. I've climbed to the summit of mountains (my first was Mt Rainer in'67) Got my nose & teeth fixed and modeled for the Carolyn Hansen Agency in Seattle, Jones NY, Wilhemina Agency- NY & the Ford Agency - Chicago. Remember the "Everybody Needs Milk " billboards back in the '70s? Then...I went back into horses where I was some kind of "tough competition" (so they say) I was just having fun and forgot about the wins. Those wins spawned Fan clubs all along the West Coast & Canada. It was kind of fun being asked for my autograph. I lost my first husband (25 yrs my senior) to a stroke in '98 after I cared for him for his last 3 yrs. I remarried in 2001 (after dating some real losers) He's an AWESOME man who was an Alaskan fisherman. Boy does HE have the stories to tell that makes the "Deadliest Catch" seem mild. He fished the North marker in the Bering Sea. Our two very beautiful daughers (1 is his the other mine) are doing well. "Our" son just entered college in 2010 and is well...still finding his balance between partying and the serious stuff like studying. I'm now re-training Arabian race horses for their second career when they retire from racing (at age 2-4) I win with them in hunter, dressage, western & english pleasure, jumping & reining classes. Yes! I'm busy and THAT keeps "old age" from sneaking up on me. I stay model thin and try and keep the wrinkles from forming with good nutrition along with my required exercise. I'm looking for a place to work with horses in AK because my husband deserately wants to return and escape this frying pan called TX. So, if any of you know of horse places in AK (Juneau or Anchorage preferred) let me know. I'm now the age that I cried about when I was in my 20's and yet I'd never want to give up what I've acquired in knowledge & experience. God is good and He guides my steps and fixes things when I do get off the path He's designed for my benefit. It's a shame that it takes us humans so long to recognize where our strength & grace really come from. Hey, if you haven't done so already, check out my first book that's listed on Barnes & Noble Just type in my name and it will come up. (I've written 4 others but they're not entirely "by" me. Go to my website at www.JanSydnam.com where you can read excerpts from several of my published works. Not going to retire...ever! I'm having waaaaay too much fun! Anyway, "retirement" should never mean stopping...just changing!

He and I were very involved in Scouting and Chris earned Eagle. Our daughter, Camille graduated from high school in June and will attend Siena College, near Albany, NY. Both played multiple sports in high school and Camille will play water polo for the Siena Saints, an NCAA Division One program. My wife, Ann has her own CPA firm, Norman and Kitto PLLC. The Lord freed me from an abusive 24-yr marriage in '92 and brought me full circle into a wonderful marriage to Ted Sharp in Sept 1995. Five kids & 12 grandkids live within an hour of us in Bothell, and it's nearly a full time job keeping up with them and their activities. One daughter/hubby lives in NY with their 3 girls. We love camping, fishing and hiking and get away whenever we can. We're there and it's awesome!!! We are busier and happier now than we've ever been. We're exploring hobbies and the only time we set the alarm is to go fishing and to church. We are very active at our church and with a local prison ministry sending out a Bible study correspondence course to inmates across the country. It's really a blessing!

Jerilynn@rmhcseattle.org Shoreline Washington RMH Facilities supervisor Married 4, 3 boys and 1 girl 5 and 2 on the way 1st time 26yrs; 2nd time 8 yrs Ten years ago I was recently divorced and had moved back to Seattle, the first time on my own, actually, ever. My father had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and so for the first few years I did a huge circle from West Seattle to my job to the North end after work to help with my father. Before I moved back to Seattle I was acquainted with a young man who helped me a great deal during a very difficult time. One day he declared his feelings for me, but the timing not being right and a big age difference making me afraid, we went our separate ways for several years…but alas, love won out and we celebrate our 8th anniversary the 25th of this month. One year after our marriage we moved in with my parents to give consistent care to my father who needed 24hr supervision. He died 4 years ago. My mother grieved greatly and asked my husband and I if we would stay with her as she is also going blind, of course there was no question. One of my concerns before entering into this marriage was my commitment to my parents…My husband has been a wonderful support and has unselfishly given in so many ways to be a comfort to my family. I feel very lucky. I have worked at the Ronald McDonald House in Seattle since 1999 and it certainly gives an amazing outlook on the important things in life. These kids are a true inspiration. As far as retiring, who knows what that will look like. It depends on my mother’s condition, I will no doubt continue to work at RMH until I need to stay home. My mother has a wonderful garden and we love to work in the yard. My goal is to get repairs complete (needing to be done during my father’s illness) while my mother can still enjoy the view of her yard, she has always worked so hard on it. My husband is wonderful at taking on the “honey do” list from both my mother and I. I love to work, it makes me happy, so I am quite sure retirement will be all of that!
Thanks Mike, so much for all of your help and support getting me on boardJ!!!

jodywaldum@comcast.net Olympia WA Accountant Single Again 3 daughters 3 10 + 3 My first husband and I were married for 10 years and had 3 daughters before he died in an accident in 1983. I remarried in '96, which created a household of 5 teenaged girls living under one roof. Not a good idea. We divorced after 3 years, but are still great friends. I've had my own accounting business for the past 20 years, and eventually became an employee of one of my clients. That was 6 years ago and I have been with the Association of Washington Business as the staff accountant since then. However, I recently return to self-employment in order to cut back on my hours and allow for more flexibility. A group of us SHS grads gets together once a year for a long weekend of sharing old memories and making new ones. The photo in the "Now" album shows the group (maiden names): Me, Mary Jo Keane, Laura Burt, Trudy Wheeler, Helen Nordlund, Carol Walsh & Terri Whittle. Diane Schreifels is missing from the photo for this particular event. We will be at the reunion festivities in full force! I will probably always work at least a couple of days a week. However, I am trying to plan for my future by getting ready to sell my current home and building a smaller, low-maintenance residence. At some point I see myself living in S. California during the Winter, playing tennis and golfing and coming back to the PNW for the Summer months. I also want to travel more internationally--I've visited some places I'm dying to see again and have a list of other "must sees".

EDMONDS WA COMMERCIAL FISHERMAN Married 3 2 35 Jonas went to his final rest on May 26, 2007 after a long fight with cancer. He lived with Bonnie Marie Jakobsen the love of his life in Edmonds,Washington. He was well loved and respected as 350 people came to pay their final respects at his memorial service on May 31 2007. Please see the notice of his passing in our memorial section. In Loving Memory of Jonas Although I haven't seen him in more than ten years I know I'll miss him forever. I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anybody? Its 40 years later and I haven't seen Jonas Jakobsen since the first week of June 1967, it was the week I graduated Shoreline on my father's 60th Birthday, Odd how life works. Today Jonas is still my friend, despite the passage of a lifetime and his untimely death after a long and valiant fight against cancer. Forty years, it seems like an eternity and just a day away, it remains fresh, green, in the memories of my mind, how can that be? Stand By Me, a movie which talks about time, life and relationships and where death is never the end of a story, seems to say it best. The friends of your youth are those who will always have a special place in your heart. I like to say life is the journey, not the end, and for me Jonas will always remain a special friend of mine. Dale, his brother in law mused that it was Jonas's time to rise and go to his final home with God. I said, I said I would like to have seen him live a much longer life and I would like to have talked to him at least one more time. Jonas had everything to live for in life, his passing is mourned by all who knew him. The Church where his friends and family said a final goodbye was filled to overflowing by people who had been touched by his wit,his kindness and humanity. Jonas was a lucky man for he had many of God's most precious gifts showered on him, he had everything a man could want in life except length of years. In my mind Jonas will always be the tall muscular kid, shy at first with others but with a ready grin, just off the boat from Norway, who I helped with his US history. Jonas was the first guy I knew who had dimples like Kirk Douglas, the girls loved him and Jonas loved life. Jonas's life was all about his family, friends, soccer, music and the sea. I looked through the pictures of the days of Jonas's life at the Church where he worshiped at and I was struck by how natural and poised he looked , wherever he was, in the uniform of the Seattle Reign soccer team in the Woodinville soccer fields or doing the hard work of fishing in Alaska to care for his family. Had the ground swell that is soccer today, come to the US 10 years sooner everybody at Shoreline would have known his name, he would have lead the Shoreline soccer team to victory because he was a great athlete. Yet it is the people who knew him best that say, while he was great at soccer, music helped define him. He was a magician of a musician for he had mastered the art of weaving life and music together through his own heart with his accordion in a way that thrilled and entertained thousands. It's so long ago now.... I remember him on one warm summer day over by the Shoreline football field just before the start of our senior year. Jonas had been allowed by his father to go fishing with the fleet and had earned for the first time a man share of salary in the dangerous waters of Alaska. Jonas was smiling and joking as he told me of his adventures and showed me his brand new 1967 Mustang that he had bought with his earnings. It was a very special day and the new school year was about to start and he had his whole life ahead of him. Now when I think of Jonas I always remember that day and I envy his good fortune in life while I I pray for his soul and for the health and welfare of his beloved family. He was our friend and I and many others will always miss him. By Wes Prichard and for all who were his friends and loved him. God Bless His Soul

tkcompton@comcast.net Shoreline WA Project Assistant Married 1 daughter 34 I haven't been to any reunions yet accept for the all school renunion when Shoreline High closed so this update is kind of "wordy." I went to work right after graduation for a bank (19 years and two banks later I quit) a starter marriage to Rhys Haydon (1966 SHS grad- go figure?) married Tom Compton, (a Ballard 1964 grad) in 1973. We bought a little house up by Shoreline College in 1975 and lived there for 15 years. Spent summers playing lots of softball, home improvements and camping and boating. In 1988, we adopted our daughter Kate and moved to Snohomish in 1991, to the house we expected to live in forever. After only 3 years in Snohomish, we transferd to Salt Lake City with Qwest Communications and lived there for 8 years. Loved the weather, skiing, golf, smaller city, great neighbors and the Olympics! Tom's gift for sales was worth the move but we had always planned on moving back to the Northwest. Our chance came in 2002 when he was offered an early retirement package. Kind of scary because our daughter was a freshman in high school, we were building a new house in Innis Arden (on property Tom's parents owned) and we had no jobs!! Our daughter graduated from Shorewood in 2006, so needless to say we are way behind on the curve as far as grandkids! Tom currently works part time for Central Market in Mill Creek in the seafood department (if you've been in there he was the one that sold you way more than you expected to buy)and I work part time for Washington Research Institute, a non-profit organization, as a project assistant. We currently have reading research and tutoring interventions primarily in the Seattle School District. I'm looking forward to the reunion!! Well, we kind of joke, we retired first and then had a family. We traveled and played a lot when we were first married to relieve the stress of full-time jobs. We are semi-retired now, Tom will officially retire in February 2008. My retirement date is yet to be determined. Retirement will include lots more salmon fishing for Tom, more time for gardening, travel and cocktails on the deck!

August 27, 1948 katrina@kosraevillage.com Kosrae FM hotelier, dive operator, environmentalist, photographer www.kosraevillage.com Married 5, 2 of my 6 20 Well - running our ecolodge, Kosrae Village, helping the Island develop in a sustainable way (I'm on the Visitors Bureau and Chamber of Commerce boards), taking *lots* of photos... Did I mention diving? (as often as I can - if you are curious about diving in Micronesia, ask me!) and teaching. Right now I'm on my way to the States for a couple of trade shows *and* to visit family and friends. retirement??? what's that?

Well, my life since high school has been an adventure.  I enrolled at the UofW right after graduation, but by the late 60’s it was pretty hard for a college kid to get a job in Seattle (remember??) and so I slid down the coast to California – “hey, there’s work in California and it doesn’t rain, right?”  Lies, all lies :)  But I stayed (yup, found work) got married, had two kids, got divorced.  I had become a systems analyst and programmer and was working hard at being a single Mom.  The boys and I met Bruce; a single Dad with 3 kids and after we all grew up a little we eventually formed a family.  When the kids started moving on with their own lives, Bruce and I decided to make a complete change and headed to Micronesia.  It’s a huge group of tiny islands in the middle of the tropical Pacific, don’t worry, no one knows where it is. :)

More about what we’re doing here in “what have you been doing since the 30 year reunion” section.

October 14, 1949 ken.rone@gmail.com Vancouver WA Retired from Cement Manufacturing Married 2...Heather (28) & Jana (25) 37 Our family relocated to Vancouver, WA in '95 after 15 years in Normandy Park. My daughters attended their high school years here, then both got BS degrees from the UW. Heather is in the Bay Area with her hubby promoting clinical studies around the country for the ultrasound mammography firm she works for. Jana is substituting in the Vancouver Schoold District as she contemplates going back to school for a teaching certificate. Linda and I moved into a new home we designed and had built in West Vancouver. We spend our time keeping it up and continuing the non-ending landscaping chores. We would welcome any of our Shoreline friends to drop over. We live by the cliff.
Looking forward to hearing from any alumni from Mrs. Bridges' Ronald Elementary School Kindergarten class of '55. Remember the A-Bomb drills?
My employer has shown remarkable patience with me over the past 30 years. But methinks my race is finally run. The end of January will be my last day and the halcyon fields of retirement await. I've got a long list among which will be spending my time looking for a miracle diet, my hair, and try to locate my Dad's '55 Matchless 500 Scrambler. I've got an old Saab I've got to get running, got some volunteer work to do and maybe even a little bit of gainfull empoloyment.

UPDATE: After 30.5 years I hung it up at Ash Grove Cement. I got the SAAB running, (see pic), I am volunteering at SCORE supporting America's small businesses and I haven't found the Matchless.  Daughter Jana is at Columbia University pursuing a Masters in Teaching. I run when the knees will allow it and am looking into starting up an industrial services consulting firm.
